From first dates and school field trips to standing ovations and milestone celebrations, generations have gathered inside this historic theatre to experience the power of live performance together.
As a nonprofit performing arts organization, The Grand 1894 Opera House serves the region by preserving a cultural landmark and ensuring access to meaningful experiences for audiences of all ages. This building is not simply historic — it
is active, vibrant, and woven into the fabric of our community.
But while The Grand’s beauty remains timeless, many of the systems that sustain it are not.
Patron seating no longer meets modern expectations for comfort and accessibility. Elevators experience frequent failures, limiting safe access. Aging HVAC systems strain to maintain comfort while driving up operating costs and placing stress on historic interiors. Masonry and roofing continue to deteriorate, increasing the risk of more significant structural challenges.
The need is urgent. Not because The Grand is failing — but because it is still strong.
This campaign is a defining moment: an opportunity to act with intention rather than react to growing challenges. To protect what generations have cherished while preparing it to meet the standards of the century ahead.
This is the Grand’s Encore – not simply a response to the applause, but a commitment to care for what generations have built and to shape what it can be for generations to come.
OVER THE NEXT THREE YEARS, THE GRAND SEEKS TO SECURE $20 MILLION IN PHILANTHROPIC INVESTMENT TO:
- Protect irreplaceable historic assets
- Improve accessibility, comfort, and production excellence
- Strengthen earned revenue for long-term sustainability
With your support and thoughtful planning, we will preserve history, protect legacy, and ensure that The Grand remains worthy of applause for generations to come.
THIS CAMPAIGN BEGINS WITH THE MOST URGENT RESPONSIBILITY:
PROTECTING THE PHYSICAL INTEGRITY OF AN IRREPLACEABLE CIVIC LANDMARK.
After more than a century of exposure and use, these improvements are no longer optional; they are essential to keeping The Grand operable, safe, and viable.
Investment in restoration includes the replacement of two critical elevators, ensuring accessibility and safety for patrons, artists, and apartment residents. Major roof work and structural reinforcements will protect the theatre from water damage and further deterioration, while essential masonry and steel repairs, spanning from the fly loft to the arched stone entrance, will stabilize some of the building’s most vulnerable areas.
Exterior weatherproofing, shoring up stonework on the Sidewalk of Stars, and a new high-efficiency HVAC system will further safeguard the building while improving comfort and energy efficiency.
Together, these projects form the backbone of the campaign, ensuring The Grand remains structurally sound and safe for decades to come.
PRESERVATION ALONE WILL NOT SUSTAIN THE GRAND. THE FUTURE OF LIVE PERFORMANCE HERE DEPENDS ON HOW AUDIENCES EXPERIENCE THE THEATRE TODAY — AND WHETHER ARTISTS AND PATRONS ALIKE CHOOSE TO RETURN.

New seating, designed to reflect the historic character of 1894 while offering modern comfort and expanded legroom, will significantly improve the patron experience. As part of this work, wood floors throughout the seating areas will be refinished, while walls and ceilings are carefully restored to renew the theatre’s elegance.

Upgraded LED house lighting and a permanent, state-of-the-art sound system will elevate every performance while reducing costly equipment rentals required by many of the exceptional artists we host. Behind the scenes, relocating laundry facilities will allow for a dedicated artist green room, strengthening hospitality and professionalism.
Together these enhancements ensure that The Grand is not simply preserved, but prepared to inspire and welcome the next generation of audiences and artists.
TO REMAIN VIBRANT AND FINANCIALLY RESILIENT, THE GRAND MUST STRENGTHEN ITS OPERATIONAL CAPACITY THROUGH PRACTICAL, MISSION-ALIGNED AVENUES.
This portion of the campaign focuses on strategic investments that improve functionality, expand revenue potential, and support long-term sustainability while keeping artistic programming at the center.
Acquiring and improving additional parking would resolve a long-standing challenge for patrons and touring artists, improving access, safety, and convenience while creating earned revenue through daily and special public use.
Additional real estate acquisition would relieve major shortages in storage, rehearsal, and operational space—limitations that currently constrain efficiency, programming flexibility, and artist hospitality. This expansion would support additional areas to offer as event rentals, retail opportunities, and residential income that directly strengthen day-to-day operations.
A small portion of campaign funding will support renovating The Grand’s ten existing apartments to modern standards. These updates are projected to generate more than $100,000 in annual income, creating reliable, recurring revenue that supports programming and operational stability.
Finally, modest office renovations will ensure our professional staff has the appropriate space for focused work, meetings, and donor engagement.
These are not cosmetic upgrades. They are strategic investments in space that will allow staff, artists, and volunteers to serve our community in a professional space that presents The Grand and its mission.
ONE COMMITMENT REMAINS UNWAVERING: THE GRAND WILL NOT GO DARK.
Major restoration within an active performing arts venue requires careful planning and flexibility. Campaign funds will ensure performances continue safely throughout construction by supporting essential staffing, temporary adjustments, and operational needs during the most disruptive phases of work.
Artists will take the stage. Audiences will gather. Programming will remain central to our mission even as improvements move forward.
Renovations will be scheduled during traditionally slower periods whenever possible. These strategic decisions ensure The Grand continues to welcome audiences throughout the campaign—and for the next century.
