The Grand Kids Festival committee recently selected twelve designs submitted from area students as winners of The Grand Kids Festival Banner Design Contest. First through fourth place winners were selected from three different age categories in the annual banner design contest. First place contest winners will receive a $50 Target gift card and first through third place winners will recreate their designs on banners to be hung throughout the festival site. All winners will receive a festival t-shirt, tickets for their family to attend the festival, and will have their artwork printed on greeting cards that will be made available for sale at the festival. The Grand Kids Festival, set for Saturday April 5, 2008, will be held from 10 am – 5 pm on historic downtown Postoffice Street, between 20th and 23rd Streets.

Contest winners are: (Grades K-2) 1st place – Emma Sparks, Galveston Catholic School-Galveston; 2nd place – Ariel Antman-Kennedy, Trinity Episcopal School-Galveston; 3rd place – Samantha Ojeda, Oppe Elementary- Galveston; 4th place – Daylen Clark, Satori School-Galveston. (Grades 3-5) 1st place – Jhoseline Araujo, Oppe Elementary-Galveston; 2nd place – Ashley-Jareen Lat-Ay, Oppe Elementary-Galveston; 3rd place – Alex Black, Rosenberg Elementary-Galveston; 4th place – Melissa Rodriguez, Burnet Elementary-Galveston. (Grades 6-8) 1st place – Morgan Roach, Trinity Episcopal School-Galveston; 2nd place – Gordon Gitrey, Mainland Preparatory Academy, LaMarque; 3rd place – Jesse Zapata, Weis Middle School-Galveston; 4th place – Inga Hager, Austin Middle School-Galveston.

Honorable mentions in each age category were also selected. Honorable mention contestants will receive two tickets to The Grand Kids Festival. Peebler, Richard Perez and Jasmine Villarreal – Austin Middle School, Galveston; Garrod Lockett, Thomas Owens and Dawn Washington – Mainland Preparatory Academy, La Marque; Megan Galan, Sonja von Marensdorff and Natalia Tesh – Trinity Episcopal School, Galveston; and Jacquelin Baraias, Ali Bilal, Katelin Kusnerik, Rachel LaForte, Summer Lowery and Alexis Richardson – Weis Middle School, Galveston.

Created as an extension to The Grand’s children’s programming and designed to raise an appreciation and awareness of the importance of fine arts for children, the festival is supported locally in part by Kathy G. McGovern, The Jamail Foundation, Comcast Cable, KUHF 88.7 FM Radio, the Galveston County Daily News, the Historic Downtown Strand Partnership and Texas Commission on the Arts. Featuring three outdoor performance stages, and over 50 unique booths offering hands on activities for children and children-oriented arts and crafts, The Grand Kids Festival has become a favorite springtime activity for families throughout the Houston/Galveston area and beyond.

Saturday festival admission is $3 for adults; $2 for children; free for children 4 years and younger.
