It's here! The Tony Award-winning production of Hairspray makes its premier at The Grand 1894 Opera House with two incredible performances on Saturday, March 13, at 3 and 8 pm. Baltimore's Tracy Turnblad - a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart - wins a spot on the local TV dance program and is transformed from outsider to irrepressible teen celebrity. Sponsored in part by Galveston.com & Co., Landry’s Restaurants, Inc., the Golden Nugget, The San Luis Resort, Spa and Conference Center, and the Houston Chronicle, this musical is BIG fun! “Irresistible! Fresh, winning and deliriously tuneful!" says The New York Times.
It’s 1962 - the ‘50s are out and change is in the air! The tale focuses on Tracy, a chubby Baltimore teen in 1962 who dreams of becoming one of the dancers on a local American Bandstand-style TV show. She gets her chance thanks to some hot new dance kicks she picks up from hanging around with the black kids at her school. But since it is 1962, the show is segregated, and the black kids can only appear on the show on the weekly "Negro Night." Tracy leads a protest to integrate the show, and in her quest becomes a star , lands the boy of her dreams.
Hairspray is that rare modern musical which follows the old Broadway axioms: Give the people a tuneful score, a sweet story and a stage full of goofy but lovable characters. This movie-gone-Broadway production doles out insanely huge helpings of energetic songs, colorful sets and good vibes that will leave you smiling long after you leave the theater, and might even help renew your hope in a good old-fashioned American musical.
"So many numbers bring down the house, it's a wonder the theatre is still standing!" raves New York Magazine. Don't miss this cult classic at The Grand!
